SUMMARY:BRN August Academy with Ven. Dayananda
DESCRIPTION:To Sign Up and Give Dana and Get Reminders Click Here \n\n\nThe True Nature of Existence: Deconstructing the Sensation of Incompleteness \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis talk investigates the true nature of existence through the Buddha’s teaching on the four inversions of perception\, mind\, and view\, found in the Vipallasa Sutta. Rather than viewing our lives through personal narratives\, we will examine how these inversions cause us to instinctively mistake the impermanent for permanent\, and the non-self for a solid\, unchanging “I.” \nWe will explore how these distortions manifest as a persistent sensation of incompleteness\, the precise meaning of dukkha\, which arises whenever existence is “not entirely to our way.” By recognizing that existence is a series of conditional arisings rather than a state governed by a fixed “master\,” we begin to loosen the unquenchable thirst of the unawakened mind. The talk focuses on how untrapping ourselves from these views allows for a steady\, balanced mind\, no longer driven by the eight vicissitudes of worldly gain and loss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About the Academy \nThe Academy has invited some of the leading teachers in the field of Buddhist recovery. On the first Sunday of every month for an hour each teacher will explore the sharp edges of suffering through the lens of the Buddhist Teachings. \nThe Academy brings together teachers from different Buddhist lineages and approaches. Themes like addiction\, alcoholism\, depression\, stinking thinking and compulsive behaviors will be explored. \nDuring this event we will meditate\, listen to the teaching\, then have time for a Q & A at the end.

SUMMARY:Joe Clements: Empathy & Compassion: The Path to Forgiveness
DESCRIPTION:What if we could look at our past with greater understanding? \nIn recovery\, forgiveness often begins close to home. We may look back and see choices we regret\, relationships we hurt\, or years spent reaching for relief. Compassion invites us to also recognize the person who was struggling—and doing their best to feel better with the tools they had. \nThis practice makes room for both compassion and accountability: understanding the conditions behind our actions while taking responsibility for the harm they caused. \nJoe offers this invitation: \n“Instead of constantly trying to change the way we feel\, we can learn to change our relationship to the way we feel.” \nMeet Joe \nJoe Clements is a mindfulness meditation teacher\, emotional awareness coach\, and founder of Sit.Feel.Heal. Meditation Center in Santa Cruz\, California. Drawing on his own recovery\, Buddhist training\, and more than a decade of work in recovery communities\, Joe brings a practical\, compassionate approach to meeting our experiences with curiosity and greater choice. \nLearn more at josephclements.com and sitfeelheal.org. \n \nMore About the Academy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Academy has invited some of the leading teachers in the field of Buddhist recovery. SUMMARY:November Teaching with Mary Stancavage
DESCRIPTION:Meet Mary \nMary Stancavage has practiced meditation\, yoga\, and cultivated a spiritual practice for over 30 years and in 2009 was empowered to teach Buddhadharma. Mary is based in the Los Angeles area and teaches classes\, retreats and does individual mentoring. She has taught mindfulness at recovery centers\, has co-facilitated Year-to-Live groups since 2008\, and has had a weekly dharma class for over a decade. She also was director of Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society for ten years.  Mary completed the Buddhist Chaplaincy Program at the Sati Center and served as a volunteer chaplain at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. She also served as Executive Director of the Mind Body Awareness Project from 2016 to 2018. In taking the practice off the cushion\, Mary is honored to serve on the board of CLUE: Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice. Along with teaching she continues to investigate what it means to live with an undefended heart. She is committed to relevancy in her teaching and talks often on social justice issues and currently co-facilitates a Women and Whiteness group. Fun fact: Mary has a Master’s Degree from UCLA and worked as an archaeologist in Syria. \nMore info can be found at her website\, marystancavage.org \nMore About the Academy \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Academy has invited some of the leading teachers in the field of Buddhist recovery.
